Keep or Tweak MOD

Kelly Smith-Wells, Jeff Lynch, Todd Egger, Deb Burger, and Mike Mast
· If teaching period, then why have it?
· Lose 20-30 band members to other things / students benefit with flexibility of being able to go with the way the band can allow for it now
· Funding CAT is able to be kept with the time students spend in Ag to meet requirements
· Makes DTV/24-7 & Yearbook possible
· Open Studio days allow for 10+ students to work in Art
· Helping students absent, needing extra assistance, etc. makes a positive attribute
· Department issues able to be taken care of during MOD, no other time dedicated
o Allowed for the communication, build curriculum, etc. which was not possible without MOD
· Dropout rates before and after?
· Lack of enforcement of going to assigned MOD keeps it from being able to “make” students get help
· 40 minute lunches were too long
· clubs time to meet
· potentially designate days to no other events?
· All of the other stuff, where does it take place (pictures, class meetings, etc.)
· Chorus & band do not have to compete
· Honors ensemble possible with current MOD
· Coop students able to take advantage of the time in the day and still meet requirements
· Data to support involvement during
· MOD should not be “just a study hall”

New Schedule

(Devin Knorr, Kelly Michaels, Kati Huber, Toby Gearhart, Jason Foresman, Beth Mauk)
Issues:
  • Productive use of time?
  • Athletes are not in class
  • Has discipline been reduced with MOD, or has it been displaced?
Goals:
  • Productive use of class periods, less interruptions
  • Earlier end to "regular class periods" (less affect from early dismissal)
  • Offer students incentive for strong academic performance and good behavior
  • Offer students daily opportunity to meet with teachers, counselors and advisors
  • Less "non-learning" interruptions throughout the day

Proposed Schedule

1 7:55-8:37
2 8:41-9:21
3 9:25-10:05
4 10:09-10:49
5 10:53-11:33
6 11:37-12:17

Teacher Meetings: 7:35-7:55 (as needed)
Advisory at the end of the day: 2:33-3:05
-incentive for seniors to leave at 2:24
-better fit for early dismissals (athletics, pep rally)
4-minute gap between classes, further eliminate tardiness

TARDIES TO SCHOOL

Vella, Grozier, L. Keller, Petrus
Pros and cons of existing system:
Clearly stated in agenda - pro
Perhaps initiated late - con
Messy to implement - con
Questionable deterrent value - con
Possible solutions:
--Consequence for Skipping Lunch Detention
--Better record-keeping
--Some students seek lunch detention to avoid cafeteria
--2% of kids are affected
Pros and cons of proposals:
Sometimes students are at the mercy of parents who drive them
Future Plans for the subcommittee:
Make sure that the policy and the punishment are stated clearly
Provide incentive for students who make a statistical improvement -- but who takes ownership?
Move the small number of repeat offenders through the discipline manager
